BONE HEALTH & PILATES

Balance is important for our bone health.

Bone Health, Pilates & the FRAX Tool: Knowledge Is Strength

As a Pilates instructor, I talk a lot about strength, stability, and movement. But today, I want to talk about something that supports all of that from the inside out: bone health.

You may not think about your bones often—but they’re literally holding you up every day. And just like muscles, bones respond to how we move, how we fuel our bodies, and how we care for ourselves as we age.

Why Bone Health Matters

From around the age of 30, we naturally begin to lose bone density. For women, this process can speed up significantly during and after menopause due to hormonal changes. But this doesn’t mean we’re powerless—far from it.

Pilates is an amazing way to support bone health because it focuses on:

Weight-bearing movement (bodyweight counts!)

Improved balance and coordination (which helps prevent falls)

Spinal alignment and core strength (which supports posture and reduces injury risk)

Enter: The FRAX Tool

To help people understand their personal risk of fractures, the World Health Organization developed a free, easy-to-use calculator called FRAX. It estimates your 10-year probability of a major osteoporotic fracture based on factors like age, weight, smoking, medical history, and family history.

It takes just a couple of minutes, and you don’t need a bone scan to get started (though it helps if you have one).

This Is About Empowerment, Not Fear

This isn’t about scaring anyone—it’s about being informed. Understanding your risk means you can take proactive steps to protect your bones, whether that’s:

• Prioritizing movement (like Pilates!)

• Getting enough calcium and vitamin D

• Talking to your doctor about bone scans or supplements

Important note: While I’m not a medical professional and can’t diagnose or offer medical advice, I’m happy to help you understand how to use tools like FRAX and guide you toward the right resources if you have concerns.
