What is TMJ?

TMJ is an abbreviation that many people use for disorders that affect the temporomandibular joint and the muscles that control your jaw movement.
The temporomandibular joint is situated on both sides of your head in front of your ears, where your lower jawbone meets your skull as shown in the illustration below.

Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction
TMJ dysfunction can be mild, moderate or severe. It can be a temporary pain, intermittent pain or a steady pain that can last for many years.
Common symptoms include:

-
Headaches
-
Pain behind the eyes.
-
Dizziness, nausea.
-
Earaches or ringing of the ears (Tinnitus)
-
Clenching or grinding of the teeth
-
Neck, shoulder, or back pain.
-
Numbness, or tingling of the fingers.
-
Hearing loss.
-
Clicking sensations when opening & closing the mouth.
Causes

It was originally thought that TMJ disorders were due to misalignment of the upper and lower teeth. While this still does have a role in causing TMJ disorders, there are many more factors that can cause this painful disorder including:

-
trauma to the jaw or joint
-
anxiety, stress, or depression
-
posture of the head and neck
-
grinding teeth
-
chewing gum (when excessive)
Treatment
TMJ Massage treatment focus‘s primarily on the TMJ, face, neck & head. I use TMJ Myofascial Release techniques, trigger point therapy and remedial massage to help relieve fascial & TMJ pain. This can involve working both outside and directly inside the mouth to release tight muscles. The treatment is relaxing and effective.
